The ECC Falcons (3-0) were able to make quick work of the Shawnee Community College Saints in straight sets at home by scores of 25-12, 25-5 and 25-18. The Falcons had somewhat of a slow start in the first set, but woke up soon after. The slow start might have been attributed to the first two days of class, but the cobwebs were soon brushed aside and ECC found form to make quick work of the Saints.
Offensively, the Falcons had some bright spots as the team started connecting passes and the offense clicked. Olivia Spanley, Vaimoana Mo’ungaffi and Leinata Leakehe all showed strong service runs with ‘aces and chases’ against the opposition. As the match went into the third set, the pressure the Falcons applied lessened as they pulled the foot off of the gas pedal and cruised to victory. Coach Mathes-Peters was pleased with the victory, but knows the team will need to compete at a high level this weekend as they head to Kansas to take on Highland Community College and Labette Community College. A big step will be taken this coming weekend as ECC looks to sharpen their game heading into September and the heart of the MCCAC and Region 16 schedule.
